In a recent interview with One America News (OAN) anchor John Hines, ALEC President Jonathan Williams shared insights from a recent White House roundtable discussion centered on the growing momentum behind school choice and President Trump’s commitment to the issue.
Williams described the strategy session as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
It was a great opportunity to sit down with the President and a number of governors who are leading the school choice movement, and I thought it was just an incredible opportunity as the president rethinks the way that education is delivered in this country and look at what the states are doing right now.
He emphasized Trump’s focus on “how the federal government can empower the states” while ensuring parents have greater control over their children’s education.
Praising Tennessee’s adoption of a universal school choice program—the 13th state to do so—Williams noted how pandemic-era school closures sparked demand for alternatives.
“We basically had no universal programs of school choice across the states. And now we have a leader in the White House, with President Trump, looking to empower that.”
Williams stressed how ALEC has long championed the benefits of parental empowerment policies that have played a significant role in the school choice revolution.
ALEC has been at the forefront, along with our members across the country, in addressing these issues. Hearing the president’s continued interest directly—specifically on how to disempower the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. and empower state and local governments—has been encouraging.
